Built in the 1920s by Domingo López Fontes, a descendant of a family who acquired lands during the municipal auctions of 1918, this estate represents an essential chapter in the viticultural history of Lanzarote. Spanning over 260,000 m², it comprises two houses, a traditional wine press (lagar), and a wine cellar (bodega), all bearing witness to the estate’s agricultural and winemaking vocation.
At its peak, the finca cultivated nearly 100 fanegas of grapes and produced up to 200,000 liters of wine per year, making it one of the most prolific wine-producing estates in the north of the island. To this day, the property remains a powerful symbol of the rural and winemaking heritage of the region.
Later in the 20th century, La Torrecilla became associated with a distinctive figure: Baron Peter von Carnap-Bornheim, a German aristocrat who fell in love with Lanzarote. Connected to the European artistic and intellectual circles, he acquired the estate where he often stayed, contributing to the preservation and appreciation of the site while respecting the local architectural style. His presence left a discreet yet lasting impression on the region’s collective memory.
A Cinematic Location
In 2008, La Torrecilla was used as a filming location for Pedro Almodóvar’s movie “Broken Embraces”, starring Penélope Cruz, among others. Some key scenes, including those set in a hospital, were shot here—further enhancing the property’s mysterious and historically rich image.
Today, this century-old estate continues to captivate with its story—a blend of local tradition, ambitious viticulture, and enigmatic European personalities such as Baron von Carnap.
